Simple and Intuitive Use

The Basics

Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level.

Guidelines

  1. Eliminate unnecessary complexity.

  2. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition.

  3. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and language skills.

  4. Arrange information consistent with its importance.

  5. Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after task completion.

In Depth

The elevator buttons do not follow the principle of simple and intuitive use. The structure and initials of the buttons are very confusing. Questions may derive from the buttons with ‘R, K, S, FH and RH’.

Examples

  • An instruction manual with drawings that are understandable without text, thus being accessible for all people no matter their reading and language skills.

  • The design of the play/pause buttons are easily understandable without the use of text, making it accessable for the same reasons as the ones listed above.
